A Long Tradition

UC Davis

Founded in 1951, the College of Letters and Science made an immediate impact on UC Davis, expanding in its first decade from 74 enrolled students to over 3,000.

Today the college is made up of three divisions, each with its own dean. The college now has over 50 departments amongst its three divisions and more than 11,000 students and over 500 faculty. The breadth of the college is complimented by its depth of study – with limitless opportunities for students to research with and learn from some of the best known minds in any given field.

Division of Humanities, Arts, and Cultural Studies

From literacy in music to literacy in countless languages, the division of Humanities, Arts, and Cultural Studies (HArCS) explores a range of aesthetic and cultural expression through rigorous study, programs and research.

Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences

The foundations for understanding the way the world works – from fundamental mathematics and physics to basic chemistry – are essential areas to launch new discoveries. With top-ranked departments (according to US News and World Report), the Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences encompasses mathematics, statistics, computer science, chemistry, natural science and physics.

Division of Social Sciences

The Division of Social Sciences is committed to educating the next generation to seek solutions to the most pressing issues of society. From research on the behavior of individuals, groups and societies, to politics and economics, the social sciences ask fundamental questions about the fabric of the human mind and society. The foundations of society from historical, cultural and biological perspectives are addressed, and the philosophical underpinnings are explored by work in ten top-ranked departments and degree programs, with instruction and research led by a distinguished faculty.
