HArCS Fellowship Policy
The purpose of this policy statement is to outline the university's commitment to support faculty who
receive major fellowships. The goal is to enable the faculty to take the fellowship at full salary
through a combination of the fellowship support, sabbatical credits, and university support. Faculty
who have insufficient sabbatical credits will be required to take a salary reduction in lieu of sabbatical.
- The faculty member must contribute sabbatical credits proportionate to the length of the fellowship.
For a full year's fellowship, the faculty member will be expected to contribute 9 sabbatical credits.
For less than 3 quarters, the sabbatical credits will be prorated.
- If the faculty member has fellowships sufficient to cover their full salary for the year, no
sabbatical credits need be contributed.
- If a faculty member has insufficient sabbatical credits to contribute, they will have to reduce
their salary proportionate to the number of credits in arrears.
- Faculty will not earn sabbatical credits while on fellowships.
- Maximum sabbatical contribution for a full year fellowship is 9 credits. If a faculty member has
more than 9 credits available, remaining credits will roll forward and can be used at a later time.
- The university will backfill any salary not supported by the combination of the fellowship funds and the
sabbatical credits. No faculty member will be asked to contribute more than 9 credits for a full year
fellowship, or 3 credits for a quarter-long fellowship.
- For fellowships that support both research costs and salary, distribution between these categories must be
negotiated with the dean's office if salary support is requested.
- Fellowships covered by this policy are listed by the National Research Council as major fellowships and
awards in Arts and Humanities. This list is available in attachment 1 of the following document:
http://www.aau.edu/aau/Policy.pdf
- Support for fellowships not listed with the NRC will be handled on a case by case basis. There
is no guarantee of a salary backfill provided for these fellowships.
