Five Faculty Named Chancellor's Fellows

Five associate professors in the UC Davis College of Letters and Science are members of the university’s newest class of Chancellor’s Fellows, an honor for early career faculty who are already making outstanding contributions to their fields.

Religion Professor Wins Book Award

Eva Mroczek, an assistant professor of religion, has won the DeLong Book History Book Prize for The Literary Imagination in Jewish Antiquity.

The book, published by Oxford University Press, offers new ways to conceptualize how early Jews understood sacred writing, treats early Jewish literary culture on its own terms rather than as a precursor to later Judaism and Christianity, and contributes a literary perspective to the texts of early Judaism. The award is given by the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing (SHARP).

Undergraduates to Showcase Research in Chemistry and Religious Studies

The outstanding research of undergraduates in the Department of Chemistry will be featured at the 11th annual Richard Larock Undergraduate Research Conference on May 20. A full day of student presentations will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Warren and Leta Giedt Hall. The event is open to all undergraduates performing research in the Department of Chemistry.

Letters and Science Graduate Programs Jump Into Top 20

UC Davis College of Letters and Science graduate programs in political science and English have jumped to the top 20 in the 2018 U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) graduate program rankings, released on March 14, 2017.

Political science and English are among the seven College of Letters and Science graduate programs ranked in the top 50 of their fields for 2018.

Wendell Potter: In Memoriam

Wendell H. Potter, a physics professor whose passion for teaching led to major reforms in undergraduate science education, died Jan. 8. He was 73.

Charles Graham Higgins Jr., professor emeritus of geology at UC Davis, died at Carmel Valley Manor in Carmel, California, on May 16, 2016. He was 90.

‘G.J.’ Mattey Receives Charles P. Nash Prize

George “G.J.” Mattey, a senior lecturer in the Department of Philosophy, recently received the Charles P. Nash Prize, an annual award honoring members of the Academic Federation, Academic Senate and Davis Faculty Association for fostering the culture of shared governance, and advocating for the welfare of faculty, staff and students across the university.
