Student Awarded Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant

Shengling “Wilburn” Wang, a senior majoring in communication and economics, was recently awarded a $1,000 study abroad grant from the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

Wang is one of 25 students nationwide to receive the award from America's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

Wang, who is from Shanghai, China, will use the grant for a three-week UC Davis Study Abroad seminar in Pokhara, Nepal, over the winter break. The Dec. 18, 2017–Jan. 4, 2018, trip culminates a fall course “Nepal—Community, Technology, and Sustainability.”

“Our group is working on a backyard poultry business project,” Wang said. “The goal is to help women and Dalits in the village start their business.”

The Community and Regional Development seminar is taught by three faculty: Jonathan London, an associate professor in the Department of Human Ecology/ Community and Regional Development and director of the UC Davis Center for Regional Change; Nancy Erbstein, an assistant research professor in the Department of Human Ecology; and Deb Niemeier, professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The selection process for the study abroad grant is based on the applicant’s academic achievement, campus and community service, relation of travel to academic preparation and career goals, a personal statement, letters of recommendation and acceptance into a study abroad program.
