Sage Lauwerys (Linguistics '19)

Sage Lauwerys, Linguistics ’19

Sage LauwerysSage Lauwerys attended the UC Davis Washington Program in Fall 2017. She shares her experience below.

Intern, Office of Senator Kamala D. Harris

Despite living in Northern California her whole life and feeling slightly hesitant about moving across the country, Sage Lauwerys fell in love with all that the East Coast has to offer.

During her time in the UC Davis Washington Program, Sage made unforgettable memories by exploring historic monuments and visiting countless events in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and, of course, Washington, D.C., itself.

In Senator Harris’ office, Sage corresponded with constituents and managed daily meetings. She researched the policy areas of her highest interest, including higher education funding, civil and voting rights, and reproductive freedom. “Senator Harris’ team was so welcoming and diverse, said Sage. “I have been privileged to work alongside a passionate, thoughtful legislative team.”

Sage embraced the Washington spirit of political involvement, leading tours of the United States Capitol Building and witnessing live voting on the Senate Floor. Her ambition to practice active citizenship was certainly fulfilled in Washington, she said.

“D.C. is a diverse city representing global interests. Even if you are not interested in politics, there is likely an institution where you can develop your academic portfolio.”

Sage’s desire to attend law school grew stronger after her firsthand policy experience, exposure to the legislative process, and several informational interviews she conducted with attorneys and Capitol Hill staffers in Washington.

After law school, Sage plans to pursue a career in public policy.
