Nine early-career faculty in the College of Letters and Science were recently named to UC Davis’ 15th annual class of Hellman Fellows. They are among 12 faculty campuswide to receive Hellman Fellowships. Grants to the 2022 fellows, all of them assistant professors, range from $15,500 to $36,000.
Two professors and an alumnus of the Department of Economics in the UC Davis College of Letters and Science recently received a spate of honors from the Economic History Association.
Two EHA accolades went to Distinguished Professor Gregory Clark:
Estella Atekwana, a geophysicist and dean of the UC Davis College of Letters and Science, was named a fellow today by the American Geophysical Union for outstanding contributions to her discipline.
Annaliese Franz, professor of chemistry, was recently selected as a 2022 American Chemical Society Fellow. Franz is one of 45 chemists across the country named in August as 2022 fellows for their outstanding contributions to science, the chemistry profession and the ACS.
Charan Ranganath, a professor of psychology and director of the UC Davis Memory and Plasticity Program, has been selected for a Psychonomic Society 2022 Mid-Career Award for his research on the science of human memory. Ranganath is one of three scholars worldwide chosen to receive the award from the international society.
Assistant professor Jesús Velázquez, a material chemist in the UC Davis College of Letters and Science, is one of 18 faculty in the U.S. selected as Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholars for 2022. These faculty are within the first five years of their academic careers, have each created an outstanding independent body of scholarship and are deeply committed to education. Each Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar receives an unrestricted research grant of $100,000.
Three faculty members from the University of California, Davis, have been elected as members of the National Academy of Sciences. They are among 120 new members and 30 international members announced by the academy May 3.
Sudipta Sen, a professor of history and Middle East/South Asian studies, was recently awarded a Sir Williams Jones Memorial Medal from the Asiatic Society of India for his influential work on the history of South Asia. Sen is a historian of the late Mughal and early British India and the British Empire, and of the environment.
Asteroid 179223 was officially named Tonytyson in February in honor of Tyson’s vision and leadership in building the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile. Scheduled to start full science observations in 2024, the Rubin Observatory will image the entire visible night sky every three nights for 10 years.
Three faculty from the UC Davis College of Letters and Science are among 564 newly elected Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science: Professor Davide Donadio, Department of Chemistry, Professor Fernanda Ferreira, Department of Psychology, and Distinguished Professor Emeritus John Gunion, Department of Physics and Astronomy.
