Hemispheric Institute Scholars Present Recent Findings

Ten doctoral students across many disciplines in the College of Letters and Science and two students from outside the college will present research done as UC Davis Hemispheric Institute on the Americas Summer Fellowship recipients. The fellowships allowed the students to travel to further their scholarship into diverse topics ranging from music about the Panama Canal to examining human remains for insights into drought and societal collapse in Peru.

Alternative Energies, Mentorship and Building Community at UC Davis

The spark for science was always within Jessica Ortiz-Rodríguez. As a child growing up in Puerto Rico, she loved visiting the Discovery Channel Store. And when the holidays rolled around, Ortiz-Rodríguez’s parents always knew there’d be something there that they could gift their daughter. Telescopes, microscopes, chemistry sets, the list went on and on.

$700K Grant to Discover New Energy Materials

Researchers at the University of California, Davis, and Iowa State University have received a $700,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to discover and synthesize new crystalline materials called clathrates with outstanding properties for renewable energy applications, including thermoelectric energy conversion.

Two Biofuels Research Grants to Chemistry Faculty

UC Davis researchers are taking part in clean energy grants totaling almost $4.5 million recently announced by the U.S. Department of Energy. The grants are among 15 funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) with the goal of making production of biofuels more efficient.

Recreating Nature’s Machinery for Making Hydrogen Gas

Research from the University of Illinois and UC Davis has chemists one step closer to recreating nature’s most efficient machinery for generating hydrogen gas. This new development may help clear the path for the hydrogen fuel industry to move into a larger role in the global push toward more environmentally friendly energy sources.
