State Department Names 2 College Students as ‘Critical Language Scholars’

Two UC Davis College of Letters and Science students will travel to Morocco and Brazil this summer for intensive foreign language and cultural studies as part of a U.S. Department of State program. Charles Sills, a history doctoral student, and Carlie Whiteman, an undergraduate communication major, are among five UC Davis students selected by the State Department as 2022 Critical Language Scholars.

Science and Language Come Together for Scholarship Winner

January 17, 2019 - Learning a second language provides a new perspective on the world and the people who live in it. For global disease biology major Hana Minsky, Spanish classes in the UC Davis College of Letters and Science opened her eyes to the music and culture of Latin America.

“It’s music I wouldn’t have found on my own, but I’ve discovered new genres and songs I really enjoy,” she said.

An L&S Education Extends Outside the Classroom

Scholarship Helped Alumna Take First Steps to Dream Career

Irene Ezran (B.A., international relations and Spanish, ’18) has had a lifelong fascination with international politics. With her sights set on a career as a foreign service officer, and with financial support from the Richard and Carolyn Palmer Scholarship, Ezran took her first summer internship at the United Nations.

Thirteen UC Davis students and alumni have been awarded 2018–19 Fulbright fellowships — the largest group of Aggies ever awarded. Seven of them are recent graduates of the College of Letters and Science.
