Science fiction is a sandbox for the imagination, one that’s tethered to our greatest hopes and fears, for the future, for technology, for our destiny as a species. We asked a few Department of Science and Technology Studies faculty for their top science fiction recommendations for the eager reader.
Four faculty members in the UC Davis College of Letters and Science have been named Chancellor’s Fellows for excellence in research, teaching and service.
The college's newest fellows include an expert on intellectual property in the digital age; a scholar examining how mathematical knot theory can be used to understand natural phenomena; a psychologist studying the interface between research questions and statistical models; and a specialist using geometries to understand the interactions between subatomic particles.
Six assistant professors in the College of Letters and Science have been named to UC Davis’ newest class of Hellman Fellows. The Hellman Fellows Fund provides grants to more than 100 junior faculty members annually at all 10 UCs and four private institutions. The fellowships of up to $50,000 are intended to give early-career faculty extra support for their research.
In an election year with record turnout among young voters, 22-year-old Hipolito Angel Cerros took civic engagement a step beyond most of his peers. Cerros, a science and technology studies (STS) major at UC Davis, won a seat on the city council in his hometown of Lindsay, in California’s Central Valley.
“I couldn’t sit idly by and watch events unfold around me,” Cerros said. “I wanted to make an impact.”
A student and two alumni of the UC Davis College of Letters and Science assume new positions as elected public officials this month — science and technology studies major Hipolito Angel Cerros on the city council in the Tulare County community of Lindsay and political science graduates Alex Lee and David Cortese in the California Legislature.
Recognized for excellence by their peers, three faculty in the College of Letters and Science have received service and teaching awards: Nolan Zane, Matthew Stratton and Colin Milburn.
