Liza Grandia, associate professor in the Department of Native American Studies and an internationally acclaimed public scholar, was barely drinking age when she stopped the World Bank and an international oil company from building a pipeline through the rural regions of Guatemala. The lesson Grandia learned then — that one is never too young to become engaged in public scholarship — is something that she emphasizes to her students at UC Davis.
Distinguished Professor Isabel Montañez’s commitment to undergraduate learning and development was recognized today (May 4) with the 2021 UC Davis Prize for Undergraduate Teaching and Scholarly Achievement.
UC Davis history professor Clarence Walker, who has taken a critical view of Afrocentrism, was honored with the 2015 UC Davis Prize for Undergraduate Teaching and Scholarly Achievement.
Anthropologist Suad Joseph was awarded the 2014 UC Davis Prize for Undergraduate Teaching and Scholarly Achievement. The $45,000 prize is believed to be the largest of its kind in the country and is funded through philanthropic gifts managed by the UC Davis Foundation.
