UC Davis to Host Prestigious International Mathematics Conference

This past year, UC Davis’ discrete mathematics and combinatorics program was ranked 13th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report Rankings. Now the campus is readying to host the 35th International Conference on Formal Power Series & Algebraic Combinatorics (FPSAC), a prestigious event that attracts a global audience and runs from July 17 to 21.

"It is an honor to host FPSAC at UC Davis this year,” said Professor Anne Schilling, chair of the Department of Mathematics. “FPSAC fosters interactions, collaborations and networking among mathematicians. Many of the new advances from this past year will be presented by plenary speakers and presenters, whose contributions were accepted as talks or posters.”

Since 1988, FPSAC has brought together the brightest minds in mathematics to discuss the latest advances in algebraic and enumerative combinatorics, and to explore the field’s impact on other disciplines, including physics, chemistry, biology and computer science.

Guest speakers invited to the conference include Karim Adiprasito, of the Einstein Institute of Mathematics; Jonah Blasiak, of Drexel University; Melody Chan, of Brown University; Eric Fusy, of the Universite Gustave Eiffel; Rei Inoue, of Chiba University; Mohamed Omar, of Harvey Mudd College; Sibylle Schroll, of Universitat zu Koln; Anna Weigandt, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Paul Zinn-Justin, of Melbourne University.

“A lot of work goes into organizing this conference," Schilling said. "An international program committee carefully evaluated all submissions and picked the most exciting contributions. A distinguishing feature of FPSAC conferences is also the strong tradition of fostering the next generation of algebraic and enumerative combinatorialists, so many talented junior researchers are featured. We expect over 250 participants from diverse backgrounds, which will boost the visibility of our campus."

All talks and lectures will be held in the Sciences Lecture Hall on the UC Davis campus.

In addition to featuring talks and lectures from some of the most preeminent mathematicians from around the world, the conference will include poster sessions, networking opportunities and social events, including an opening reception, banquet and day trips to Napa Valley and Old Sacramento.

Conference sponsors include UC Davis, the National Science Foundation, Google, Central Michigan University, The Combinatorics Consortium and the Combinatorics Foundation.
