Annaliese Franz Named Fellow of the American Chemical Society

Annaliese Franz, professor of chemistry, was recently selected as a 2022 American Chemical Society Fellow.

Franz is one of 45 chemists across the country named in August as 2022 fellows for their outstanding contributions to science, the chemistry profession and the ACS.

A UC Davis faculty member since 2007, she is a world-renowned researcher focusing on organic synthesis, catalysis and sustainable production of biofuels and materials from microalgae. This honor recognizes her scientific leadership in the fields of asymmetric catalysis and organosilicon chemistry, as well as her contributions to the ACS and the broader chemistry community through service, leadership and mentorship.

Franz has served as the elected chair of the ACS Division of Organic Chemistry, the largest technical division in the ACS, and also serves on a number of awards and conference organizing committees, among other activities for the international scientific society. She received a Rising Star Award from the ACS Women Chemists Committee in 2012.

In July, she was named interim associate dean for academic programs and planning in the UC Davis College of Letters and Science.

Since the ACS fellowship program began in 2009, a total of 13 UC Davis chemists have been selected as ACS fellows, including 10 faculty in the Department of Chemistry and eight who are women.
